Even though they were one of the earliest and most iconic microphone designs, by the late 1960s, the ribbon microphone's reputation had eroded to that of a outdated piece of gear, once great, but no longer suitable for modern applications. Sadly, ribbons, once the leading edge of microphone design, were dismissed by many modern engineers as a quaint archaism. When Royer Labs opened their doors in 1998, it was with the intention of bringing David Royer's unique, modern designs to the world, enabling engineers to rediscover the warm smoothness and silky sound of a great ribbon, restoring them to their rightful place in the studio.
